Valve Cover - RH, 4.6L: Removal

  1. Remove the engine air cleaner (ACL) and the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING article.
  2. Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION article.
  3. Remove the LH engine support insulator. For additional information, refer to Engine Support Insulators .
  4. CAUTION: Do not use the oil pan to support the engine or damage to the oil pan may occur.
  5. Using a wood block to support the engine, slowly lower the engine and remove the jack.

  7. Disconnect the quick connect couplings and remove the PCV tube. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION - GASOLINE AND DIESEL article.
  8. Disconnect the PCV valve electrical connector.
  9. NOTE: Rotate the PCV valve counterclockwise to remove.
  10. Remove the PCV valve from the valve cover.
  11. Remove the oil fill tube support bracket bolt.

  13. Remove the clamp and the oil filler tube.

  15. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors.

  17. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the bracket. Remove the nut, ground strap and bracket.

  19. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer from the heater outlet tube stud bolt.

  21. Remove the fuel charging wiring harness from the valve cover studs and position aside.
  22. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to clean sealing surfaces.
  23. Remove the RH valve cover.
    • Fully loosen the fasteners and remove the valve cover.
    • Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
    • Inspect the valve cover gasket. If the gasket is damaged, remove and discard the gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.
