Pinpoint Test B: The Control Illumination Is Inoperative

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
  1. B1 DETERMINE THE CONDITION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Open the driver front door.
    • Observe the door lock control switch.
    • Is the door lock control switch illuminated? 
    1. YES  : Go to  B2.
    2. NO  : Go to  B3.
  2. B2 CHECK CIRCUIT 170 (RD/LB) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280c
    • Observe the door lock control switch.
    • Is the door lock control switch illuminated? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  B7.
  3. B3 CHECK THE DIMMABLE BACKLIGHTING COMPONENTS 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Observe all the dimmable backlighting components.
    • Are all the dimmable backlighting components illuminated? 
    1. YES  : Go to  B5.
    2. NO  : Go to  B4.
  4. B4 CHECK CIRCUIT 19 (LB/RD) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220

      NOTE: If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to ground.
    • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the instrument cluster C220-26, circuit 19 (LB/RD), harness side and the instrument cluster C220-28, circuit 1002 (BK/PK), harness side.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Do the illumination components illuminate? 
    1. YES  : Go to  B6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. B5 CHECK CIRCUIT 19 (LB/RD) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220
    • Observe all the dimmable backlighting components.
    • Are all the dimmable backlighting components illuminated? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  B6.
  6. B6 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. B7 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
