Test L: Service Engine Soon Indicator (Mil) Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford RV Cutaway, 2002 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2002 Ford Econoline, 2002 Ford E450 Super Duty, and 2002 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Voltage measurement in step  1 must be performed immediately after ignition switch is turned to ON position, while SERVICE ENGINE SOON (MIL) indicator is in prove out mode (approximately 2 seconds).
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Black 12-pin harness connector C220b. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster 12-pin connector C220b (component side) terminal No. 5 (Pink/Light Green wire). See Figure. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster Black 12-pin harness connector C220b. Disconnect PCM Gray 104-pin harness connector C175. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Measure resistance of Pink/Light Green wire between instrument cluster Black 12-pin harness connector C220b terminal No. 5 and PCM Gray 104-pin harness connector C175 terminal No. 2. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, diagnose MIL problem. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Pink/Light Green wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
