Pinpoint Test C: The High Beams Are Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Lincoln Mark LT and 2007 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. C1 CHECK THE HIGH BEAM RELAY
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: High Beam Relay
    • Carry out the high beam relay component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING.
    • Is the high beam relay OK?
    1. YES  : Go to  C2.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new high beam relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. C2 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE CJB
    • Disconnect: CJB C270h
    • Place the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMPS ON position.
    • Place the multifunction switch in the HIGH BEAM position.
    • Measure the voltage between the CJB C270h-2, circuit 275 (YE), harness side and ground.
    • Fig 1: Checking Voltage To CJB

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : TURN the headlamp switch off. Go to  C4 .
    2. NO  : TURN the headlamp switch off. Go to  C3 .
  3. C3 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
    • Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202b
    • Carry out the multifunction switch component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING.
    • Is the multifunction switch OK?
    1. YES  : REPAIR circuit 275 (YE). TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. C4 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE HIGH BEAM RELAY
    • Connect: CJB C270h
    • NOTE: Make sure the multifunction switch is in the HIGH BEAM position.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMPS ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the high beam relay pin 86, circuit 275 (YE), harness side and ground; and between the high beam relay pin 30, circuit 1113 (YE/LG), harness side and ground.

    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : TURN the headlamp switch off. Go to  C5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR or INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. C5 CHECK THE HIGH BEAM RELAY OUTPUT
    • Connect a fused (20A) jumper wire between the high beam relay pin 30, circuit 1113 (YE/LG), harness side and the high beam relay pin 87, circuit 12 (LG/BK), harness side.

    • Do the high beams illuminate?
    1. YES  : REPAIR or INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : LEAVE the jumper wire connected. Go to  C6 .
  6. C6 CHECK CIRCUIT 12 (LG/BK) FOR AN OPEN
    • Disconnect: CJB C270a
    • Measure the voltage between the CJB C270a pin 6, circuit 12 (LG/BK), component side and ground.
