Pinpoint Test C: The Engine Does Not Crank And The Relay Does Not Click (Late Build Vehicles)

  1. C1 CHECK THE BATTERY 
    1. YES  : Go to  C2.
    2. NO  : CHARGE or INSTALL a new battery as necessary. REFER to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. C2 CHECK FOR PATS DTCs 
      NOTE: PATS diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are the only DTCs of concern in this step. Only repair retrieved non-PATS DTCs if a customer concern is reported.
    • Check for PATS DTCs.
    • Were any PATS DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to ANTI-THEFT article to diagnose the PATS DTCs.
    2. NO  : Go to  C3.
  3. C3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1522 (DG) FOR VOLTAGE AT THE OTIS DIODE 
    • Disconnect: OTIS Diode
    • Key in START position.
    • For vehicles without daytime running lamps, measure the voltage between auxiliary relay box 1 OTIS diode cell, circuit 1522 (DG) and ground with the ignition switch in the START position.

    • For vehicles with daytime running lamps, measure the voltage between auxiliary relay box 1 OTIS diode cell, circuit 1522 (DG) and ground with the ignition switch in the START position.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C6.
    2. NO  : Go to  C4.
  4. C4 CHECK CIRCUIT 1050 (LG/VT) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250
    • Measure the voltage between ignition switch C250-4, circuit 1050 (LG/VT) and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 1050 (LG/VT). TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. C5 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH 
    • Carry out the Ignition Switch Component Test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING.
    • Did the ignition switch pass the component test? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR circuit 1522 (DG) or 32 (RD/LB) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. C6 CHECK CIRCUIT 1522 (DG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: PCM C175B
    • For vehicles without daytime running lamps, measure the resistance between auxiliary relay box 1 OTIS diode cell, circuit 1522 (DG) and PCM C175B-7, circuit 1522 (DG), harness side.

    • For vehicles with daytime running lamps, measure the resistance between auxiliary relay box 1 OTIS diode cell, circuit 1522 (DG) and PCM C175B-7, circuit 1522 (DG), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C7.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit 1522 (DG). TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. C7 CHECK ONE-TOUCH INTEGRATED START (OTIS) DIODE 
    • Carry out an OTIS Diode Test.
    • Is the OTIS diode open or shorted? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new OTIS diode. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  C8.
  8. C8 CHECK CIRCUIT 1093 (TN/RD) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Disconnect: Starter Motor Relay
    • Key in START position.
    • Measure the voltage between CJB starter motor relay pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD) and ground while holding the key in the START position.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C12.
    2. NO  : Go to  C9.
  9. C9 CHECK CIRCUIT 325 (DB/OG) FOR VOLTAGE AT THE DIGITAL TR SENSOR 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167
    • Key in START position.
    • Measure the voltage between digital TR sensor C167-10, circuit 325 (DB/OG) and ground while holding the key in the START position.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C10.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 325 (DB/OG). TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. C10 CHECK CIRCUIT 1093 (TN/RD) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between digital TR sensor C167-12, circuit 1093 (TN/RD) and CJB starter motor relay pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD).

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C11.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 1093 (TN/RD). TEST the system for normal operation.
  11. C11 CHECK THE DIGITAL TR SENSOR ADJUSTMENT 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new digital TR sensor. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : ADJUST the digital TR sensor as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
  12. C12 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR RELAY GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in START position.
    • Measure the voltage between CJB starter motor relay pin 85, circuit 1785 (LG/VT) and pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD).

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new starter motor relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  C13.
  13. C13 CHECK PCM CIRCUIT 325 (DB/OG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: PCM C175B
    • Measure the resistance between PCM C175B-43, circuit 325 (DB/OG), harness side and CJB starter relay pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD).

    • Is the resistance reading 5 ohms or less? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C14.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 325 (DB/OG). TEST the system for normal operation.
  14. C14 CHECK CIRCUIT 1785 (LG/VT) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between the CJB starter motor relay connector pin 85, circuit 1785 (LG/VT) and PCM C175B-34, circuit 1785 (LG/VT).

    • Is the resistance reading 5 ohms or less? 
    1. YES  : DIAGNOSE the PCM. REFER to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES article.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 1785 (LG/VT) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
