Pinpoint Test Q: Electronic Shift On The Fly (ESOF) Functional Test

NOTE: 4x4 high/low (4H/4L) is not intended for driving on hard/dry surfaces.
  1. Q1 CHECK FOR 4WD INDICATOR PROVE OUT 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Do the 4WD indicators illuminate at prove out? 
    1. YES  : Go to  Q2.
    2. NO  : CHECK the instrument cluster for faults. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article.
  2. Q2 CHECK 2WD OPERATION 
    • Stop the vehicle.
    • Transmission in NEUTRAL.
    • Switch the MSS to 2H.
    • Do the 4WD indicators turn off? 
    1. YES  : Go to  Q5.
    2. NO  : Go to  Q3.
  3. Q3 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Transmission in PARK.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart  for diagnosis.
    2. NO  : Go to  Q4.
  4. Q4 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 2H 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test M .
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test R .
  5. Q5 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 2H 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the transfer case. REFER to TRANSFER CASE article.
    2. NO  : Go to  Q6.
  6. Q6 CHECK 4H OPERATION 
    • Switch the MSS to 4H.
    • Does the 4H indicator illuminate correctly? 
    1. YES  : Go to  Q9.
    2. NO  : Go to  Q7.
  7. Q7 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Transmission in PARK.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart  for diagnosis.
    2. NO  : Go to  Q8.
  8. Q8 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 4H 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test R .
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test L .
  9. Q9 CHECK FOR 4H WIND-UP 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface.
    • Is straightline wind-up present? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test P .
    2. NO  : Go to  Q10.
  10. Q10 CHECK 4H WIND-UP IN TURNS 
    • Drive the vehicle in 4H while turning.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : Go to  Q11.
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test L .
  11. Q11 CHECK 4L OPERATION 
    • Bring the vehicle to a stop with the transmission in NEUTRAL and switch the MSS to 4L.
    • Does the 4L indicator illuminate correctly? 
    1. YES  : Go to  Q14.
    2. NO  : Go to  Q12.
  12. Q12 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Transmission in PARK.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart  for diagnosis.
    2. NO  : Go to  Q13.
  13. Q13 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 4L 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test R .
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test M .
  14. Q14 CHECK FOR 4L WIND-UP IN TURNS 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present and 4L functioning? 
    1. YES  : Go to  Q15.
    2. NO  : CHECK for 4WD Control Module (PCM) DTC(s). REFER to the Inspection and Verification procedure in this article. IF no DTC(s) are present, go to Pinpoint Test M .
  15. Q15 CHECK 4L TO 2H SHIFT 
    • With the vehicle at a stop and transmission in NEUTRAL, switch the MSS from 4L to 2H.
    • Do the 4WD indicators turn off? 
    1. YES  : Go to  Q18.
    2. NO  : Go to  Q16.
  16. Q16 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Transmission in PARK.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart  for diagnosis.
    2. NO  : Go to  Q17.
  17. Q17 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 2H 
    • Switch the MSS to 2H.
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test M .
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test R .
  18. Q18 CHECK FOR TRANSFER CASE DISENGAGEMENT 
    • With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
    • Rotate the rear driveshaft while observing the front driveshaft.
    • Does the front driveshaft rotate? 
    1. YES  : REFER to TRANSFER CASE article.
    2. NO  : Go to  Q19.
  19. Q19 CHECK FOR LH AND RH IWE DISENGAGEMENT 
    NOTE: The engine must be at idle during the following steps to supply vacuum for IWE engagement/disengagement.
    • Start the engine and allow to idle.
    • Rotate the LH front tire one revolution forward and one revolution backward while observing the LH front halfshaft and universal joint.
    • Rotate the RH front tire one revolution forward and one revolution backward while observing the RH front halfshaft and universal joint.
    • Does the LH or RH front halfshaft rotate? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test K .
    2. NO  : Go to  Q20.
  20. Q20 CHECK FOR IWE VACUUM LEAKS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect both vacuum lines from the IWE solenoid.
    • Using a vacuum pump, apply 508 mm (20 in) Hg of vacuum to the IWE apply vacuum circuit.
    • Observe the vacuum reading.
    • Did the vacuum drop more than 25 mm (1 in) Hg per minute? 
    1. YES  : CHECK the IWE and related components for leaks. Go to Pinpoint Test K .
    2. NO  : Go to  Q21.
  21. Q21 CHECK 2H TO 4H SHIFT AT SPEED ABOVE 32 KM/H (20 MPH) 
    • Switch the MSS to 2H.
    • Drive the vehicle on the road and shift from 2H to 4H while driving above 32 km/h (20 mph).
    • Does the transfer case shift to 4H satisfactorily? 
    1. YES  : The 4WD system is functioning correctly.
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test N .
