P0401 - Exhaust Gas RECIRCULATION (EGR) Flow Insufficient Detected

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2007 Ford RV Cutaway, 2007 Ford Pickup, 2007 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2007 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2007 Ford Econoline. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
P0401 - EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) FLOW INSUFFICIENT DETECTED

Description:  Calculated expected air in the intake system is less than the actual mass air flow (MAF).
Possible Causes:
  • Aftermarket intake systems or exhaust systems
  • Restricted air flow (intake or exhaust)
  • Charge air cooler (CAC) system leaks (hoses and cooler)
  • EGR valve position sensor bias
  • Exhaust pressure (EP) sensor bias
  • Restricted EGR cooler
  • EGR actuator
  • Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
  • MAF sensor
Diagnostic Aids:  There are 3 different entry conditions that can activate the EGR monitor after the EGR valve closed position has been learned. EGR flow command, RPM, desired fuel, EGRVP voltage, engine oil temperature (EOT), engine coolant temperature (ECT) and intake air temperature 2 (IAT2) are values that need to meet specific calibrated levels for the EGR monitor to be activated.
