Pinpoint Test D: DTCS B1600 The Pats Ignition Key Transponder Signal Is Not Received (Damaged Key Or Non-Pats Key) And B2431 The Transponder Programming Failed

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2006 Ford Fusion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Large metallic objects, electronic debit transponder devices or a second key on the same key ring as the PATS key may cause vehicle starting problems and record DTCs under certain conditions. If a fault cannot be identified, examine the customer's key ring for such objects or devices. If present, inform the customer that they need to keep these objects from touching the PATS key while starting the engine. These objects and devices cannot damage the PATS key, but can cause a momentary problem if they are too close to the key during engine start.

If a problem occurs, turn the ignition switch OFF and restart the engine with all other objects on the key ring held away from the PATS key.

Check to make sure the PATS key used by the customer is an approved Ford PATS key. (PATS keys from Rotunda, Huf or Strattec are approved Ford PATS keys.)

    • Key in OFF position.
    • NOTE: Check to make sure the customer and replacement PATS keys are approved Ford encoded PATS keys.

      Cut a new PATS key.

    • Program the new PATS key. Refer to KEY PROGRAMMING USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT .

NOTE: Use the customer's original PATS key, not the PATS key that was cut in the previous step.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: CLEAR DTCs.
    • Carry out the instrument cluster self-test.
    • Is DTC B1600 or B2431 retrieved?

REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS .
