Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Montego, 2006 Ford Freestyle, and 2006 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the radiator grille. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION and REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  2. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL .
  3. Remove the fender splash shield. For additional information, refer to FENDER SPLASH SHIELD - FREESTYLE .
  4. Remove the 3 bumper cover-to-fender nuts.
    • To install, tighten to 7 N.m (62 lb-in).

  5. Position the front bumper cover forward to gain access to the front fender-to-headlamp assembly bolt.
  6. Remove the front fender-to-headlamp assembly bolt.

  7. Remove the rocker panel molding. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  8. NOTE: If shims are present during removal, be sure to reinstall shims and check fender alignment.
  9. Remove the 2 lower fender mounting bolts located at the lower rear of the fender.
    • To install, tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb-in).
  10. Remove the 2 fender bracket-to-fender bolts.
    • Enter through the wheelhouse opening and reach around the fender bracket to gain access to the fender bracket-to-fender bolt heads.
    • To install, tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb-in).

  11. Remove the fender mounting bolt located at the rear of the wheelhouse opening.
    • To install, tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb-in).

  12. Remove the side mirror trim panel located at the top rear portion of the fender to gain access to the fender mounting bolt.
  13. Remove the fender mounting bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb-in).

  14. Remove the fender mounting nut.
    • To install, tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb-in).

  15. Remove the fender upper mounting bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 12 N.m (9 lb-ft).
  16. Remove the fender.
  17. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
