Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Montego, 2006 Ford Freestyle, and 2006 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: While repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of contaminants or premature failure of the power steering components can result.
NOTE: Do not allow power steering fluid to contact the engine accessory drive belt.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir. For additional information, refer to POWER STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR  .
  3. Disconnect the power steering pressure line fitting from the power steering pump adapter.
    • Discard the Teflon® O-ring seal.
    • To install, tighten to 65 N.m (48 lb-ft).
  4. Remove the 2 power steering pressure line bracket-to-reservoir bracket bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 7 N.m (62 lb-in).

  5. Remove the 2 power steering pressure line bracket-to-cylinder head bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb-in).
  6. Disconnect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector.
  7. Remove the power steering pressure line bracket-to-steering gear bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
    8. CAUTION: Whenever the power steering lines are disconnected from the steering gear, new O-rings seals must be installed.
  8. Remove the power steering line clamp plate bolt, rotate the clamp plate, disconnect and remove the power steering pressure line from the steering gear.
    • Discard the O-ring seals and bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
  9. To install, reverse removal procedure.
    10. CAUTION: Whenever a line fitting with an O-ring seal is disconnected, new O-ring seals must be installed.

  10. Using the special tool, install a new Teflon® O-ring seal on the power steering pressure line fitting at the pump.
