Steering Column - Manual Transmission: Assembly

    All vehicles 

  1. Lubricate the steering column lock lever actuators with premium long-life grease.

  2. Install the upper and the lower steering column lock lever actuators.
  3. Install the steering column lower bearing retainer.
    1. Position the steering column lower bearing retainer.
    2. Install the bolts and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

    4. NOTE: The UP position of the bearing must be facing forward.

  4. Install the steering column bearing and sleeve.
    5. CAUTION: Install the steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
    NOTE: Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.

  5. Install the steering column bearing in the steering column lock cylinder housing.

    6. Vehicles with tilt column 

    CAUTION: Install the steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
    NOTE: Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.

  6. On a tilt steering column, install the steering column bearing in the steering column lock cylinder housing.

    7. All vehicles 

  7. Position the steering column shaft in the steering column lock cylinder housing.
    • Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring on the steering column shaft.

  8. Install the steering column bearing sleeve.

  9. Install the steering column upper bearing spring.

  10. Install the snap ring.

    11. CAUTION: The turn signal cancel cam has a flat surface and a surface that has 4 lobes. Make sure to install the cam with the flat surface upwards. Push the cam onto the shaft until it makes contact with the snap ring.

  11. Install the turn signal cancel cam.
  12. Install the lock cylinder housing screws loosely and position the steering actuator housing in a vise.
    • Lubricate the lock cylinder housing with premium long-life grease.

    13. NOTE: Lubricate the lock cylinder housing bushings with premium long-life grease.
  13. Position the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft on the steering actuator housing.
    • Make sure the upper and lower steering column lock actuators are aligned.

  14. Position the steering column locking levers on the steering actuator housing.
    1. Using a shop fabricated tool, position the steering column locking levers.
    2. On tilt steering columns, install and compress the steering column position spring.

      3. Vehicles with tilt column 

  15. Position the lock cylinder housing and steering actuator housing.
    • Tighten the lock cylinder housing screws to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).

      • All vehicles 

  16. Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring.

    17. Vehicles with tilt column 

  17. Install the sensor ring.
    1. Install the sensor ring.
    2. Install the steering column lower bearing spring.

      3. Vehicles with fixed column 

  18. Install the snap ring.

  19. Install the ignition switch. Align the ignition switch with the slot and index mark on the steering column.
    • Tighten the ignition switch screws to 6 Nm (54 lb-in).

    20. NOTE: The narrow section of the keyhole in the lock gear should be in the 1 o'clock position.
  20. Install the steering column lock gear.
    • Use premium long-life grease to coat the steering column lock gear.

  21. Install the steering column lock housing bearing.
    • The narrow section of the keyhole should be in the 1 o'clock position, with the tab inboard at the 3 o'clock position, and rotate it counterclockwise.
    • Lubricate the steering column lock housing bearing with premium long-life grease.

  22. Install the steering column upper bearing retainer firmly to engage the 4 retention tabs into the lock housing.

  23. Install the clockspring. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  24. Install the steering column. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN .
