Test C: Wipers Operate At Interval Setting But Inoperative At High &/Or Low Speed

- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. On manual transmission models, depress clutch pedal. Observe CTM/GEM PIDs IGN_A, IGN_S, IGN_OG/L and IGN_RD while turning ignition switch through all positions. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with switch positions, repair appropriate ignition switch circuit(s). See POWER DISTRIBUTION in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Using NGS tester, retrieve DTCs stored in CTM/GEM. Clear DTCs. Perform ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and note all DTCs. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, go to appropriate test step. See TEST "C" DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX table.TEST "C" DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX

See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE/GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. - Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe PID WPMODE while turning wiper switch through all positions. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to step 7. If PID values do not agree with switch positions, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect multifunction switch 7-pin harness connector C202b. Check wiper multifunction switch. See WIPER SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If multifunction switch is okay, go to next step. If multifunction switch is defective, replace defective multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Disconnect Central Timer Module/Generic Electronic Module (CTM/GEM) 26-pin harness connector C201a. CTM/GEM is located on back side of central junction box. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminals No. 1 (Pink/Yellow wire) and No. 6 (Light Blue/Orange wire). See Figure. If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If any voltage exists, repair short to voltage in appropriate wire(s) between CTM/GEM and multifunction switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance in Light Blue/Orange wire between CTM/GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 13 and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminal No. 6. See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance in Pink/Yellow wire between CTM/GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 22 and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminal No. 1. If resistance is 5 ohms or less in both circuits, replace CTM/GEM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE/GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system. If either resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire(s) between CTM/GEM and multifunction switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Using NGS tester, observe PID WPHISP while triggering active command SPEED RELAY. If PID WPHISP agrees with command mode, go to next step. If PID WPHISP does not agree with command mode, replace CTM/GEM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE/GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect CTM/GEM 26-pin harness connector C201a. CTM/GEM is located on back side of central junction box. Remove wiper high/low relay from battery junction box. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and high/low relay socket terminal No. 2 (Gray/Light Blue wire). See Figure. If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Gray/Light Blue wire between high/low relay and CTM/GEM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove wiper high/low relay. Check wiper high/low relay. See RELAYS under COMPONENT TESTS. If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is defective, replace defective wiper high/low relay. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and wiper high/low relay socket terminal No. 1 (White/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in White/Black wire between wiper high/low relay and central junction box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and high/low relay socket terminal No. 2 (Gray/Light Blue wire). See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Gray/Light Blue wire between CTM/GEM and wiper high/low relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Measure resistance in Gray/Light Blue wire between CTM/GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 18 and high/low relay socket terminal No. 2. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Light Blue wire between high/low relay socket and CTM/GEM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect wiper motor harness connector C125. Measure resistance in Dark Blue/Orange wire between wiper high/low relay socket terminal No. 5 and wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance in White wire between high/low relay socket terminal No. 4 and wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 4. Measure resistance between ground and wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 3 (Black wire). If any resistance reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire(s) between high/low relay and wiper motor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system. If resistance is 5 ohms or less in all circuits, check wiper motor current draw. See WIPER MOTOR under COMPONENT TESTS. If wiper motor is faulty, replace wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If wiper motor is okay, system is operating properly at this time. Retest system operation.
