Test H: Horn Always On

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting ANY repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
  1. Disconnect horn relay from battery junction box. If horn does not continue to sound, go to next step. If horn does continue to sound, repair short to voltage in Yellow/Light Green wire between battery junction box and horn.
  2. Check horn relay. See HORN RELAY  under COMPONENT TESTS. If horn relay is okay, go to next step. If horn relay is defective, replace horn relay.
  3. Disconnect clockspring 6-pin harness connector C218b. If horn continues to sound, go to next step. If horn does not continue to sound, reconnect clockspring harness connector and go to step  6.
  4. Disconnect Central Security Module (CSM) harness connector C274b. CSM is located behind left side of instrument panel. If horn does not continue to sound, go to next step. If horn continues to sound, repair short to ground in Dark Blue wire between battery junction box and CSM.
  5. Disconnect all CSM harness connectors. Inspect harness connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all CSM harness connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if problem still exists. If problem still exists, replace CSM. See CENTRAL SECURITY MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear DTCs and perform CSM self-test.
  6. Deactivate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect upper clockspring horn switch 2-pin harness connector. If horn does not continue to sound, go to next step. If horn continues to sound, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  7. Measure resistance between horn switch 2-pin harness connector terminals. Resistance should be more than 10 k/ohms when horn switch is released and 5 ohms or less when horn switch is pressed. If resistances are as specified, replace steering wheel horn switch harness. If resistances are not as specified, replace driver's side air bag module. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
