Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Column shift shown, floor shift similar.
    WARNING: If the vehicle is equipped with air suspension, the electrical power to the air suppression system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the luggage compartment. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  1. If equipped, turn the air suspension service switch to the OFF position.
  2. WARNING: If equipped with fire suppression system, depower the system. For important safety warnings and procedures, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM .
  3. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  4. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  5. Using the parking brake release handle, release the parking brake control.
  6. Pull the parking brake adjuster clip downward.

  7. Apply the parking brake control fully.
  8. Push up on the parking brake adjuster clip to lock the adjuster.

  9. Using the parking brake release handle, release the parking brake control.
  10. Disconnect the front parking brake cable and conduit from the cable union.
  11. Unclip the scuff plate, the cowl side trim panel and remove.

  12. Disconnect the parking brake release handle cable from the parking brake control.
  13. Remove the screws and the instrument panel steering column cover with the parking brake release handle.
  14. Remove the 5 instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement bolts and the reinforcement.
    • To install, tighten to 4 Nm (35 lb-in).

  15. Loosen the powertrain control module (PCM) wiring connector bolt and disconnect the connector.
  16. Loosen the bulkhead wiring connector retaining bolt and disconnect the connector.
    • Position the bulkhead wiring connector out of the way for access.
    • Push the IP side of the bulkhead wiring connector into the passenger compartment.
  17. Remove the steering column brace-to-parking brake control bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  18. Remove the instrument panel cowl side bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).

  19. Remove the instrument panel cowl side nut.
    • To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).

  20. Pull the instrument panel slightly rearward and retain it using a small block of wood.

  21. Disconnect the parking brake release vacuum hose from the parking brake release control motor if equipped.
  22. Disconnect the parking brake switch electrical connector.
  23. Disconnect the front parking brake cable and conduit from the parking brake control.
  24. Remove the 3 parking brake control bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
  25. Remove the parking brake control.
  26. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  27. WARNING: If equipped with fire suppression system, repower the system. For important safety warnings and procedures, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM .
  28. If equipped with fire suppression system, repower the system.
  29. If equipped, turn the air suspension service switch to the ON position.
