DTC P2801: Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Mariner and 2006 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
P2801 - TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR CIRCUIT RANGE/PERFORMANCE

Description:  The PCM checks the gear selector position by monitoring 3 independent voltage signals from the transmission range (TR) sensor. The TR voltages are then compared to an allowed voltage range for each gear. The test fails when the compared voltages are out of range. This DTC indicates that 2 or more TR signals are low or high.
Possible Causes:
  • Two or three TR circuits shorted to ground or SIG RTN.
  • Two or three TR circuits shorted to power or VREF.
  • Two or three TR circuits open.
  • Two TR VREF circuits open.
  • Two TR SIG RTN circuits open.
  • Two TR VREF circuits shorted to ground or SIG RTN.
  • Damaged TR sensor.
