Using Hybrid Electronic Cluster

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Navigator and 2002 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

To enter Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) self-diagnostics, press instrument cluster SELECT/RESET button before turning ignition switch to RUN position. Within 5-8 seconds, odometer will display "tESt". SELECT/RESET button must be released within 3 seconds of odometer displaying "tESt" then, repeatedly press SELECT/RESET button through odometer displays until "dtc" is displayed. When odometer displays "dtc", press SELECT/RESET button again and any continuous diagnostic trouble codes will be displayed before odometer advances to next display. Other HEC diagnostic modes can be entered when self-diagnostic function is entered. See HYBRID ELECTRONIC CLUSTER SELF-DIAGNOSTIC MODES  table.

HYBRID ELECTRONIC CLUSTER SELF-DIAGNOSTIC MODES

Odometer Display(1) Description
GAGE Activates sweep of all gauges, then displays present gauge values. Performs ROM and EE checksum tests.
All Segments Illuminated Illuminates all odometer segments.
bulb Illuminates all micro-controlled Lights and LEDs. Replace bulb or LED as necessary.
r Returns to normal operation all micro-controlled Lights and LEDs and displays hexadecimal values for ROM.
EE Hexadecimal value for EE level.
dt Displays hexadecimal coding of final manufacturing test date.
dtc Displays continuous DTCs. Pressing SELECT/RESET button will display any DTCs stored before proceeding to next step.
enG English value speed input. Display will indicate zero, if input is not received or invalid for more than one second or when vehicle speed is zero.
m Metric speed value input. Display will indicate zero, if input is not received or invalid for more than one second or when vehicle speed is zero.
tAc Tachometer value input. Display will indicate zero, if input is not received or invalid for more than one second or when engine speed is zero.
FUEL Fuel level input. Displays 255 for open circuit, about 232 for full stop, 215 for full tank, 178 for 3/4 full, 138 for 1/2 full, 93 for 1/4 full, 41 for empty mark, 0-20 circuit is shorted. Below 55 low fuel warning light should light.
OIL Oil pressure input. Normal input reading will be 000-176. Below 6 psi or inoperative switch will be greater than 176.
dEGC Last coolant temp input in Centigrade. About 120°F (49°C), gauge should be at cold mark; 140°F (60°C) gauge should be at beginning of normal band. 248°F (120°C) gauge should be at end of normal band. About 246°F (119°C), temperature warning light should light.
br Brake fluid level input.
bAtt Battery voltage input. 93-102 = 6.9-9.1 volts; 115-124 = 8.5-10.7 volts; 215-225 = 15.8-18.0 volts & 230-241 = 16.9-19.1 volts.
rhEo Displays hexadecimal value for instrument cluster pulse width modulated input to HEC.
rhi, rhS & rho Pulse width modulated input duty cycle. SCP hexadecimal dimming step. Output driver counts in hexadecimal format.
Cr RUN/START sense input. Shows -h with ignition switch in START, -L with ignition switch in RUN position.
ALtF Displays hexadecimal value for alternate fuel level.
PA-PE7 Not used.
GAGE Repeats test display cycle.
