Pinpoint Test L: The AUTOLAMPS Are On Continuously

  1. L1 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH OUTPUT 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Monitor the instrument cluster headlamp switch status PID while rotating the headlamp switch knob from the autolamps ON to OFF positions.
    • Does the PID match the headlamp switch position? 
    • Yes  : GO to  L4.
    • No  : GO to  L2.
  2. L2 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205.
    • Carry out the headlamp switch component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING for component testing.
    • Is the headlamp switch OK? 
    • Yes  : GO to  L3.
    • No  : INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to HEADLAMP SWITCH  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. L3 CHECK CIRCUIT 10-LE47 (GY/OG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220c.
    • Measure the resistance between instrument cluster C220c-18, circuit 10-LE47 (GY/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : GO to  L7.
  4. L4 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE PHOTOCELL SENSOR 
    • Monitor the instrument cluster photocell status PID while covering and then illuminating the photocell.
    • Does the PID percentage change with the sensor covered and then illuminated? 
    • Yes  : GO to  L7.
    • No  : GO to  L5.
  5. L5 CHECK THE PHOTOCELL 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Photocell C286.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Monitor the instrument cluster photocell status PID while connecting and then disconnecting a fused (5A) jumper wire between photocell C286-2, circuit 8-LE42 (WH/BU), harness side and photocell C286-5, circuit 31-LE42 (BK/OG), harness side.

    • Does the PID percentage change with the jumper wire connected and then disconnected? 
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new photocell. REFER to LIGHT SENSOR  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation
    • No  : GO to  L6.
  6. L6 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-LE42 (WH/BU) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
    • Measure the resistance between instrument cluster C220a-19, circuit 8-LE42 (WH/BU), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : GO to  L7.
  7. L7 CHECK INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. REPEAT the self-test.
