Pinpoint Test D: The Rear Window Wiper Stays On Continuously

  1. D1 CHECK THE STEERING COLUMN MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Steering Column Multifunction Switch C202a.
    • Carry out the steering column multifunction switch component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING article.
    • Did the steering column multifunction switch pass the component test? 
  2. D2 CHECK CIRCUIT 1302 (WH/LG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between steering column multifunction switch C202a-4, circuit 1302 (WH/LG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to D3.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. D3 CHECK CIRCUITS 410 (WH/OG) AND 411 (BK/LB) FOR SHORTS 
    • Disconnect: Rear Window Wiper Motor C4171.
    • Measure the resistance between rear window wiper motor C4171-4, circuit 410 (WH/OG), harness side and ground; and between rear window wiper motor C4171-3, circuit 411 (BK/LB), harness side and ground.

    • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to D4.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. D4 CHECK FOR CORRECT WIPER MOTOR OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all wiper motor connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all wiper motor connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : GO to D5.
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. D5 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW WIPER MOTOR 
    • Carry out the rear window wiper motor component test as outlined in this article.
    • Did the rear window wiper motor pass the component test? 
    • Yes  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by binding or incorrect pivot arm adjustment. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : INSTALL a new rear window wiper motor. REFER to REAR WINDOW WIPER MOTOR .
