Diagnostics Deactivation Procedure (Seats Removed)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The following diagnostics deactivation procedure should not be used when replacing air bag system components. If replacing air bag system components, see COMPONENT REPLACEMENT DEACTIVATION PROCEDURE  .

This procedure should only be used when performing air bag system diagnostics or repairs.

  1. Record pre-set radio frequencies for reprogramming, if equipped. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
  2. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) to harness side of upper clockspring connector (in place of air bag module).
  3. Remove instrument panel relay cover, located on top right side of instrument panel. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connector, located inside of instrument panel relay opening. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) to harness side of passenger-side air bag module connector (in place of air bag).
  4. Remove affected front seat(s). See FRONT SEAT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect side air bag harness connector(s) on any front seat(s) remaining in vehicle, if necessary. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-133/40-009) to vehicle harness side of side air bag module connectors (in place of air bag modules).
  5. Remove right front and rear scuff plates. Release tab and open right seat belt guide cover. Remove seat belt guide mounting nut and guide. Remove weatherstrip from right-side B-pillar. Remove right side B-pillar assist handle caps, retaining screws and assist handle. Pull outward on B-pillar trim panel to release retaining clips and remove trim panel.
  6. Disconnect right front seat belt retractor/pretensioner connector. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-133/40-009) to vehicle harness side of right front seat belt pretensioner connector (in place of pretensioner). Repeat procedure for left seat belt pretensioner.
  7. Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at all deployable air bag system devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  .
