Removal & Installation

- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disconnect negative battery cable. On models equipped with automatic transmission set parking brake and move shift lever to "1" position. Remove upper steering column cover. Position necessary electrical connectors aside. Remove junction box panel cover. Remove 2 bolts and disconnect parking brake release lever. Remove 2 bolts and disconnect hood release lever.
- Remove 6 bolts and lower instrument panel steering column cover. Loosen screws and remove 2 large bulkhead electrical connectors from instrument panel fuse junction panel. See Fig 1 . Remove 2 bolts and 2 nuts from instrument panel fuse junction panel. See Fig 2 . Disconnect GEM electrical connectors. Remove screws and separate GEM from instrument panel fuse junction panel.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Connect negative battery cable. Check AIR BAG warning light for proper system function. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
