Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Navigator and 2002 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If installing NEW clockspring, remove locking mechanism pull ring. If installing existing clockspring, remove tape applied during removal procedure. If clockspring rotor has moved or if unsure of clockspring rotor position, center clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING CENTERING  under ADJUSTMENTS. Maintain clockspring centered position.
    NOTE: Slight turning of clockspring is allowable during installation to properly align clockspring to steering column.
  2. With flats of clockspring aligned to flats on steering column, slide clockspring onto steering column. Engage clockspring retaining clips. Route clockspring wiring harness down side of steering column and connect harness to retainers.
  3. Remove air bag simulator from clockspring harness connector and reconnect connectors. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. DO NOT install driver-side air bag or activate air bag system at this time. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) to upper clockspring connector.
  4. Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at all deployable air bag system devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  . Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy. Install driver-side air bag module. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
