Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: The evaporative emissions system contains fuel vapor and condensed fuel vapor. Although not present in large quantities, it still presents the danger of explosion or fire. Disconnect the battery ground cable from the battery to minimize the possibility of an electrical spark occurring, possibly causing a fire or explosion if fuel vapor or liquid fuel are present in the area. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and can be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.

    All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  4. Disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe from the fuel tank.
    • To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).

    5. NOTE: Follow the operating instructions supplied by the equipment manufacturer.

  5. Attach the fuel draining hose to the storage tanker and insert the hose through the disconnected filler pipe hose. Pump the fuel into the fuel storage tank.
  6. Disconnect the fuel filler pipe vent tube. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  7. Disconnect the vapor and fuel tube quick connect fittings at the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  8. Disconnect the fuel vapor vent control tube assembly valve electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the fuel delivery module electrical connector.
  10. Disconnect the vapor and fuel tube quick connect fittings at the fuel filter. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .

    11. Two-piece driveshaft with center bearing shim 

    NOTE: Some two-piece driveshafts will have a shim between the crossmember and the center bearing. If this shim is present then the following step must be carried out.
  11. Remove the driveshaft center bearing bolts and position and support the driveshaft aside.
    • To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

    12. All vehicles 

  12. Remove the 4 fuel tank skid plate nuts and the skid plate.
    • To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  13. Use a suitable jack to support the fuel tank.

  14. Remove the fuel tank support strap bolt-to-number 4 crossmember and remove the fuel tank strap.
    • To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  15. Remove the fuel tank support strap bolt-to-number 3 crossmember and remove the fuel tank strap.
    • To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  16. Using the suitable jack, lower the fuel tank.
  17. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
