Pinpoint Test E: DTC C1145 (RF), DTC C1155 (LF), DTC C1230 (Rear) - Wheel Speed Sensor Input Circuit Failure

- E1 CHECK FOR DTCS
- Connect the diagnostic tool.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Clear the Continuous DTCs.
- Drive the vehicle at least 10 mph (16 km/h).
- Retrieve and document continuous DTCs.
- Is DTC C1145, C1155, or C1230 present?
- Yes : For DTCs C1145 and C1155, if the active wheel speed sensor tool is avalaible, GO to E2. If the active wheel speed sensor is not availble, GO to E4. If DTC C1230 is present, GO to E4.
- No : Inspect the wheel speed sensors, wheel speed sensor wiring and wheel speed sensor tone rings. REPAIR or INSTALL new as necessary. If any other DTCs are retrieved, go to the ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX .
- E2 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OUTPUT USING THE SPECIAL TOOL
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor.
- Connecto the special tool to the wheel speed sensor connectors.
- Ignition ON.
- Select the correct polarity on the special tool and turn the special tool power switch to the ON position.
- Is the module output LED illuminated?
- Yes : GO to E3.
- No : GO to E6.
- E3 CHECK FOR SHORTED FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR
- Raise the suspect wheel until it can spin freely.Disconnect: REFER to JACKING & LIFTING article.
- While monitoring the special tool, slowly spin the suspect wheel.
- Do the sensor ouput LEDs illuminate and flash and is the current overload LED illuminated?
- Yes : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test.
- No
: If the current level LED is not illuminated and the sensor output LEDs do not illuminate or if the current level LED is illuminated Red, INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 4X2 , or WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 4X4 . CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
If the current Level LED is not illuminated and the sensor output LEDs illuminate Green but do not flash, Inspect the wheel speed sensor tone ring and INSTALL new if necessary. If the tone ring is OK, INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 4X2 , or WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 4X4 . CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E4 CHECK FOR A SHORT TO POWER NOTE: Both circuits must be checked for each DTC.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: ABS Module C135.
- Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor.
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between the ABS module, harness side, and ground as follows:CIRCUIT REFERENCE CHART
DTC ABS Module Circuit C1145 (RF) C135-3 516 (YE/BK) C1145 (RF) C135-4 514 (YE/RD) C1155 (LF) C135-20 522 (TN/BK) C1155 (LF) C135-21 521 (TN/OG) C1230 (rear) C135-22 519 (LG/BK) C1230 (rear) C135-23 518 (LG/RD) - Is voltage present?
- Yes : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : GO to E5.
- E5 CHECK FOR A SHORT TO GROUND NOTE: Both circuits must be checked for each DTC.
- Key in OFF position.
- Measure the resistance between the ABS module, harness side, and ground as follows:CIRCUIT REFERENCE CHART
DTC ABS Module Circuit C1145 (RF) C135-3 516 (YE/BK) C1145 (RF) C135-4 514 (YE/RD) C1155 (LF) C135-20 522 (TN/BK) C1155 (LF) C135-21 521 (TN/OG) C1230 (rear) C135-22 519 (LG/BK) C1230 (rear) C135-23 518 (LG/RD) - Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
- Yes : GO to E6.
- No : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E6 CHECK FOR AN OPEN NOTE: Both circuits must be checked for each DTC.
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: ABS Module C135
- Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor.
- Measure the resistance between the ABS module, harness side and the suspected front wheel speed sensor connector pins, harness side as follows:CIRCUIT REFERENCE CHART
DTC Circuit ABS Module Wheel Speed Sensor Connector Pin C1145 (RF) 516 (YE/BK) C135-3 1 C1145 (RF) 514 (YE/RD) C135-4 2 C1155 (LF) 522 (TN/BK) C135-20 1 C1155 (LF) 521 (TN/OG) C135-21 2 - Measure the resistance between the ABS module, harness side and the rear wheel speed sensor, harness side as follows:CIRCUIT REFERENCE CHART
DTC Circuit ABS Module Rear Speed Sensor C455 Pin C1230 519 (LG/BK) C135-22 2 C1230 518 (LG/RD) C135-23 1 - Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to E7.
- No : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E7 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT
- Key in OFF position.
- Connect: ABS Module C135.
- Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor.
- For DTC C1155:
- connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between LF wheel speed sensor C150-2, circuit 521 (TN/OG), harness side and component side.
- connect the automotive meter between LF wheel speed sensor C150-1, circuit 522 (TN/BK), harness side and component side.
- For DTC C1145:
- connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between RF wheel speed sensor C160-2, circuit 514 (YE/RD), harness side and component side.
- connect the automotive meter between RF wheel speed sensor C160-1, circuit 516 (YE/BK), harness side and component side.
- For DTC C1230: connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between rear wheel speed sensor C455-1, circuit 518 (LG/RD), harness side and component side. Connect the automotive meter between rear wheel speed sensor C455-2, circuit 519 (LG/BK), harness side and component side.
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the current while slowly spinning the wheel.
- Does the automotive meter switch between 6.3mA and 15.4mA?
Yes : GO to E9.
No : GO to E8.
- E8 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OUTPUT
- Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor.
- Key in ON position.
- For DTCs C1145 or C1155, measure the voltage between the suspect front wheel speed sensor pins, harness side.
- For DTC 1230, measure the voltage between rear wheel speed sensor C455-1, harness side and C455-2, harness side.
- Are the voltages less than 9 volts?
Yes : GO to E9.
Yes : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 4X2 , or WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 4X4 . CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E9 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect all ABS connectors.
- Check for:
- Corrosion
- Pushed-out pins
- Connect all ABS connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE . TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
