Test V: Check Engine Light Always On
NOTE:
CHECK ENGINE light may also be referred to as Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).
- Start engine. If CHECK ENGINE light illuminates and then goes out after engine is started, system is okay at this time. If CHECK ENGINE light illuminates and remains on after engine is started, repair powertrain control concern. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V (GASOLINE) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If powertrain control concern does not exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector C421. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If CHECK ENGINE light does not illuminate, replace PCM. If CHECK ENGINE light illuminates, check for short to ground in Black/Orange wire. If short to ground does not exist, replace instrument cluster printed circuit.
