Test L: Charge Warning Never/Always On

  1. Check charging system warning indicator to determine if warning is always or never on. If warning is always on, go to next step. If warning is never on, go to step  8 .
  2. Measure voltage at terminal "A" (Orange/Light Blue wire) on voltage regulator. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair power distribution circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  3. Disconnect generator harness connectors C154. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If indicator light is not on, go to next step. If indicator light is on, repair short to ground in Light Green/Yellow wire.
  4. Connect generator harness connector C154. Disconnect generator harness connector C153 (single pin). Using a fused jumper wire, connect White/Black wire to positive battery post. If indicator light is on, remove jumper and go to next step. If indicator light is off, remove jumper and go to step  6 .
  5. Disconnect generator harness connector C154. Measure resistance in White/Black wire between generator harness connector C153 and generator regulator harness connector C154. If resistance is greater than one ohm, repair open in White/Black wire. If resistance is one ohm or less, check for a loose or bent pins. If pins are okay, replace voltage regulator.
  6. Start engine. Measure voltage at terminal "S" on back of generator. If voltage is at least 1/2 of battery voltage, go to next step. If voltage is not at least 1/2 of battery voltage, repair generator as necessary. See appropriate GENERATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  7. Measure voltage at B+ terminal on back of generator with engine running at 2000 RPM and all accessories off. If voltage is greater than 15.5 volts, repair charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If voltage is 15.5 volts or less, repair or replace voltage regulator.
  8. Disconnect generator harness connector C154. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at Light Green/Red wire terminal at generator harness connector C154. If voltage is greater than zero volts, go to next step. If voltage is zero volts, repair open in Light Green/Red wire.
  9. Using a fused jumper wire, ground Light Green/Red wire terminal at generator harness connector C154. If indicator light is on, remove jumper wire and go to next step. If indicator light is off, replace light bulb or repair open in Light Green/Red wire.
  10. Check for poor ground connections between voltage regulator and generator, generator and engine, or engine and battery. If all connections are clean and tight, go to next step. If required, clean and tighten all connections as necessary.
  11. Disconnect generator harness connector C153 (single pin). Measure voltage at White/Black wire terminal at generator harness connector C153. If voltage is zero volts, go to next step. If voltage is greater than zero volts, repair short to voltage in White/Black wire, which should be hot only when engine is running. Check for swapped wires in generator harness connector C154.
  12. Measure voltage at terminal "S" on back of generator. If voltage is greater than one volt and warning light is on with "S" terminal harness connector disconnected, replace generator. If voltage is one volt or less, replace voltage regulator.
