Oil Pressure Warning Never/Always On

  1. Start engine and determine if oil pressure warning is always or never on. If low oil pressure warning is always on, go to next step. If warning light is never on, go to step 4).
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine off. Disconnect oil pressure switch connector. If warning light is illuminated, go to next step. If warning light is not illuminated, replace oil pressure switch and retest system.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect cluster connector C251. Measure resistance between cluster connector C251 terminal No. 3 (White/Red wire) and ground. See Figure - Figure . If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair circuit No, 31 (White/Red wire) for short to ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit and retest system. See PRINTED CIRCUIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect cluster connectors C250 and C251. Check for battery voltage at connector C251 terminal No. 10 (White/Yellow wire) and terminal No. 11 (Black/Yellow wire). Check continuity to ground at connector C250 terminal No. 1 (Black wire). See Figure -12. If values are correct, go to next step. If values are not correct, repair suspect circuit(s) as required and retest system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect connector at oil pressure switch. Connect a jumper wire from circuit No. 31 (White/Red wire) at oil pressure switch harness connector to ground. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe oil pressure warning light. If warning light is illuminated, replace oil pressure switch and retest system. If warning light is not illuminated, go to next step.
  6. Remove jumper wire. Disconnect cluster connector C251. Check resistance of White/Red wire between cluster connector C251 terminal No. 3 and circuit No. 31 at oil pressure switch. If resistance is 3 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster printed circuit and retest system. See PRINTED CIRCUIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair circuit No. 31 (White/Red wire) for open circuit and retest. See Figure - Figure .
