Seat Belt Warning Indicator Inoperative

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect NGS tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Monitor PID IGN_GEM while turning key to each position. If PID values agree with key positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with key positions, see STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
  2. Retrieve continuous and on-demand DTCs. If no DTCs or DTC B1428 is present, go to next step. If DTC B1342 is present, replace GEM. GEM is located behind center of instrument panel. If DTC B1426 is present, go to step 9). If DTC B1462 is present, go to SEAT BELT WARNING CHIME INOPERATIVE.
  3. Check seat belt warning chime operation. If seat belt warning chime operates properly, go to next step. If seat belt warning chime is not operating properly, go to SEAT BELT WARNING CHIME INOPERATIVE.
  4. Turn ignition on. Monitor PID SBLTLMP. Toggle active command SBLT light ON and OFF. If PID SBLTLMP reads correct state, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system operation. If PID SBLTLMP reads ON-B, go to step 10). If PID SBLTLMP reads OFFO-G, go to next step.
  5. Check oil pressure gauge operation. If oil pressure gauge operates properly, go to step 6). If oil pressure gauge does not operate properly, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster connector C215 terminal No. 8 (Red/Yellow wire). See Figure . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Red/Yellow wire.
  7. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance of standard instrument cluster connector C216 terminals No. 1 and No. 10 (component side). Measure resistance of optional instrument cluster connector C216 terminal No. 10 and instrument cluster connector C215 terminal No. 8 (component side). See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, check seat belt warning indicator bulb in cluster and replace as necessary. If bulb is okay, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  8. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) connector C221. GEM 26-pin connector C221 is located behind center of instrument cluster. Measure resistance of Yellow wire between GEM connector C221 terminal No. 12 and instrument cluster connector C216 terminal No. 10. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow wire. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  9. Measure resistance between ground and GEM connector C221 terminal No. 12 (Yellow wire). If measured resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Yellow wire. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  10. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) connector C221. GEM 26-pin connector C221 is located behind center of instrument cluster. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and GEM connector C221 terminal No. 12 (Yellow wire). If voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Yellow wire. Clear DTCs and retest system. If no voltage is present, go to next step.
  11. Using NGS tester, monitor PID SBLTLMP. Set active command ajar light off. If PID SBLTLMP reads OFFO-G?, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system. If PID SBLTLMP does not read OFFO-G?, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system.
