4WD High, 4WD Low Indicator Inoperative

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect NGS tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Monitor PID IGN_GEM while turning key to each position. If PID values agree with key positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with key positions, see STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
  2. Retrieve continuous and on-demand DTCs. If no DTCs or DTC P1804, P1806, P1808 or P1810 is present, go to next step. If DTC B1342 is present, replace GEM. GEM is located behind center of instrument panel.
  3. If 4WD HIGH indicator is inoperative, go to step 7). If 4WD LOW indicator is inoperative, go to step 13). If 4WD HIGH and 4WD LOW indicator are inoperative, go to next step.
  4. Verify O/D indicator light operation. If O/D off indicator light operates properly, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system operation. If O/D off indicator light does not operate properly, Retest system.
  5. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster connector C214 terminal No. 5 (Orange/Black wire). See Figure . If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system operation. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect headlight switch connector. Measure resistance of Orange/Black wire between instrument cluster connector C214 terminal No. 5 and headlight switch connector terminal No. 8. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector C214 terminal No. 5 (Orange/Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms between instrument cluster and headlight switch and more than 10 k/ohms between ground and instrument cluster, see appropriate HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS wiring diagram in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in the WIRING DIAGRAMS section. If resistance is 5 ohms or more between instrument cluster and headlight switch or 10 k/ohms or less between ground and instrument cluster, repair open or short in Orange/Black wire.
  7. Turn ignition on. Monitor PID 4WDHIGH. Toggle active command HIGH light ON and OFF. If 4WD indicator illuminates then goes off, see appropriate TRANSFER CASE DIAGNOSIS article in the TRANSFER CASES section. If 4WD indicator does not illuminate then go off and PID 4WDHIGH reads ON-B, go to step 11). If 4WD indicator does not illuminate then go off and PID 4WDHIGH reads OFFO-G, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) connector C223. GEM 22-pin connector C223 is located behind center of instrument cluster. Connect jumper wire between ground and GEM connector C223 terminal No. 14 (Gray wire). See Figure . Turn ignition on. If 4WD HIGH indicator illuminates, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system. If 4WD HIGH indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  9. Remove 4WD high indicator bulb. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for continuity between 4WD high indicator bulb terminals. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace bulb. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  10. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C214. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance of Gray wire between GEM connector C223 terminal No. 14 and instrument cluster connector C214 terminal No. 3. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Gray wire. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  11. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C214. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Monitor PID 4WDHIGH. Toggle active command HIGH light ON and OFF. If PID 4WDHIGH reads ON-B, go to next step. If PID 4WDHIGH does not read ON-B, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  12. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) connector C223. GEM 22-pin connector C223 is located behind center of instrument cluster. Measure voltage between ground and GEM 22-pin connector C223, terminal No. 14 (Gray wire). If voltage is indicated, repair short to voltage in Gray wire. Clear DTCs and retest system. If no voltage is indicated, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  13. Turn ignition on. Monitor PID 4WDLOW. Toggle active command LOW light ON and OFF. If 4WD indicator illuminates then goes off, see appropriate TRANSFER CASE DIAGNOSIS article in the TRANSFER CASES section. If 4WD indicator does not illuminate then go off and PID 4WDLOW reads ON-B, go to step 17). If 4WD indicator does not illuminate then go off and PID 4WDLOW reads OFFO-G, go to next step.
  14. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) connector C223. GEM 22-pin connector C223 is located behind center of instrument cluster. Connect jumper wire between ground and GEM connector C223, terminal No. 10 (Light Blue/Black wire). See Figure . If 4WD LOW indicator illuminates, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system. If 4WD LOW indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  15. Remove 4WD low indicator bulb. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for continuity between 4WD low indicator bulb terminals. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace bulb. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  16. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C214. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance of Light Blue/Black wire between GEM connector C223 terminal No. 10 and instrument cluster connector C214 terminal No. 2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
