DTC C1146, C1148, C1156, C1158, C1166, C1168, C1176, C1178, C1233, C1234, C1235, C1236 & C1237 (1998 Models)

  1. Check wheel speed sensor output. Ensure the following conditions do not exist:
    • Individual wheel diameter too large.
    • Dynamic wheel balancing performed with ignition on.
    • Vehicle towed on rear wheels with ignition on.
    • One wheel turned with vehicle on hoist and ignition on.

If any of the listed conditions exist, using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation.

Partially raise vehicle on hoist. Ensure parking brake is operating properly and does not drag on one brake. Turn ignition off. Install New Generation Star (NGS) tester. Using NGS tester, select Parameter Identification (PID) for suspect wheel. Observe PID display while rotating suspect wheel. If PID display indicates wheel speed while suspect wheel is rotated, go to step 4)  . If PID display does not indicate wheel speed while suspect wheel is rotated, go to next step.

  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 24-pin ABS control module connector. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between specified terminals of ABS control module connector for suspect wheel. See WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT RESISTANCE  table. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Wiggle wiring harness and connectors while measuring resistance to locate possible intermittent problem. If resistance is 1000-1500 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 1000-1500 ohms, go to step 4)  .
    WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT RESISTANCE

Application Measure Between Terminals No. (Wire Color)
    Left Front 21 (White) & 22 (Brown)
    Left Rear 23 (White/Blue) & 24 (Brown/Blue)
    Right Front 7 (White/Red) & 8 (Brown/Red)
    Right Rear 9 (White/Green) & 10 (Brown/Green)
  3. Disconnect suspect wheel speed sensor connector. If resistance is greater than 10,000 ohms, go to step 6)  . If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair suspect wheel speed sensor circuit. Reconnect all components. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation.
  4. Disconnect suspect wheel speed sensor connector. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between specified terminals of ABS control module connector and wheel speed sensor connector for suspect wheel. See WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT CONTINUITY  table. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair suspect wheel speed sensor circuit. Reconnect all components. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation.
    WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT CONTINUITY

Application ABS Control Module Connector Terminal No. (Wire Color) Wheel Speed Sensor Connector Terminal No. (Wire Color)
Left Front 21 (White) 1 (White)
    22 (Brown) 2 (Brown)
    Left Rear 23 (White/Blue) 1 (White/Blue)
    24 (Brown/Blue) 2 (Brown/Blue)
    Right Front 7 (White/Red) 1 (White/Red)
    8 (Brown/Red) 2 (Brown/Red)
    Right Rear 9 (White/Green) 1 (White/Green)
    10 (Brown/Green) 2 (Brown/Green)
  5. Raise and support vehicle. Check suspect wheel speed sensor and toothed sensor indicator ring for damage and/or looseness. Check suspect wheel speed sensor for proper installation. If wheel speed sensor and toothed sensor indicator ring are okay, replace suspect wheel speed sensor. Reconnect all components. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation. If wheel speed sensor and/or toothed sensor indicator ring are damaged, replace damaged component and go to step 1)  .
  6. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between specified terminal of ABS control module connector and ground for suspect wheel (measure both circuits individually). See WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT CONTINUITY  table. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is greater than 10,000 ohms, reconnect ABS control module connector and go to next step. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair suspect wheel speed sensor circuit. Reconnect all components. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation.
  7. Check, clean and reconnect ABS control module connector. Test drive vehicle. If ABS warning light remains illuminated during test drive, replace Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM . Reconnect all components. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation. If ABS warning light goes out during test drive, fault was repaired in previous step. System is okay. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation.
