Tachometer Inoperative

  1. Turn ignition on. If instrument cluster warning indicators and gauges are not operating, go to WARNING LIGHTS & GAUGES INOPERATIVE test. If instrument cluster warning indicators and gauges are operating, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. Using external tachometer, measure RPM between ground and instrument cluster connector C1 terminal No. 9 (White/Black wire). See Figure and Figure . If external tachometer shows engine RPM, repair or replace instrument cluster. If external tachometer does not show engine RPM, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). PCM is located at right rear of engine compartment. Install EEC-V 104-Pin Breakout Box (014-00950) following manufacturer's instructions. Measure resistance between instrument cluster connector C1 terminal No. 9 (White/Black wire) and breakout box test pin No. 48. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in White/Black wire.
  4. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin No. 48 and pin No. 24. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in White/Black wire.
  5. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between breakout box test pin No. 48 and pin No. 24. If voltage is less than one volt, replace PCM and retest system. If voltage is one volt or more, repair short to voltage in White/Black wire.
