Test H: Solenoid Mechanical Failure

  1. Electronic Diagnostics  Ensure transaxle harness connector is fully seated. Ensure shift lever is in park. Connect NGS tester or equivalent to DLC. Perform KOEO test until Continuous Memory trouble code(s) have been displayed. Confirm DTCs P1714, P1715, P1716 and/or P1740 are still present. If any DTCs are also present for shift solenoids or TFT sensor, repair those DTCs first. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING CODES  . Perform drive cycle test. See TRANSMISSION DRIVE CYCLE TEST  . Repeat QUICK TEST  . If no other DTCs are also present for shift solenoids or TFT sensor, replace appropriate solenoid. Go to next step.
  2. Transmission Drive Cycle Test  Perform drive cycle test. See TRANSMISSION DRIVE CYCLE TEST  . If transaxle upshifts and downshifts correctly, go to next step. If transaxle does not upshift or downshift correctly, see TROUBLE SHOOTING in FORD AX4N overhaul article.
  3. Retrieve DTCs  Ensure shift lever is in park. Connect NGS tester or equivalent to DLC. Perform KOEO test until Continuous Memory trouble code(s) have been displayed. Are DTCs P1714, P1715, P1716 and/or P1740 are still present, replace PCM. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING CODES  . Perform drive cycle test. See TRANSMISSION DRIVE CYCLE TEST  . If DTCs P1714, P1715, P1716 and/or P1740 are not present, test is complete. If problem is still present, see TROUBLE SHOOTING in FORD AX4N overhaul article.
