Removal (Taurus & Sable)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. From inside vehicle, remove steering column tube boot-to-cowl panel nuts. Remove steering column intermediate shaft coupling-to-steering column lower yoke bolt. Position steering column tube boot out of way. Remove pinch bolt from steering column intermediate shaft coupling to power rack and pinion steering gear.
- Remove steering column intermediate shaft coupling. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove exhaust system flex tube-to-dual converter "Y" pipe attachment. Disconnect O2 sensor harness connector and "Y" pipe. Support vehicle with jackstands under rear edge of front sub-frame. Remove tie rod ends from wheel knuckles.
- Mark position of jam nuts and remove tie rod ends from tie rods. Remove nuts from steering gear-to-front sub-frame bolts and remove bolts. Raise vehicle carefully until rear sub-frame separates from body approximately 4" (102 mm). Remove steering shaft "U"-joint shield. Remove power steering left side pressure hose from bracket. Remove bracket.
- Remove left stabilizer bar link. Disconnect electrical connector from power steering auxiliary actuator. Auxiliary actuator is located on steering gear. Rotate steering gear to clear bolts from front sub-frame and pull left to ease line fitting removal. Remove hoses from steering gear. Remove steering gear assembly through left wheel well.
