Tie Rod Ends, Boots & Ball Joints: Disassembly

  1. Mount steering gear in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture (D87P-3504-B on all models except Taurus, Sable or Mustang; T57L-500-B on Mustang). On Taurus and Sable, drill out mounting holes in holding fixture with a 9/16" drill to allow steering gear assembly mounting bolts to fit. Mount steering gear assembly in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture (T57L-500-B). On all models, loosen jam nuts on outer ends of tie rods. Remove jam nuts and tie rod ends. Remove 4 clamps which retain boots to gear housing and tie rods. See Figure. Remove boots and breather tube. Remove pinion shaft (if necessary). See PINION SHAFT & SPOOL VALVE ASSEMBLY .
  2. For units equipped with roll pins, use Lock Nut Pin Remover (D81P-3504-N) to remove pins from inner tie rod ball joints. If unit is equipped with rivets, tap around rivet head with a sharp chisel so it lifts away from ball joint. Using side cutters, pry out rivet, taking care not to sheer off rivet head.
  3. Remove housing from holding fixture and lay on bench. Position rack so several rack teeth are exposed. Hold rack with an open end adjustable wrench on end teeth only. Loosen ball joint nuts with Nut Wrench (T74P-3504-U). If gear assembly contains nylon rack travel restrictors, they can be removed after tie rods are removed.
