Test E: Moon Roof Does Not Operate (Cougar, Mark VIII & THUNDERBIRD)

  1. Check Voltage Supply To Motor  - Disconnect Black moon roof control module connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and connector terminal No. 3 (Red/Light Blue wire). See Fig 1. If battery voltage exists, go to step 4). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Check Red/Light Blue Wire Circuit  - Remove POWER WDO circuit breaker from fuse panel. Measure voltage at Red/Light Blue wire terminal at circuit breaker. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, repair open in Red/Light Blue wire circuit.
  3. Ensure ignition is off. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and Red/Light Blue wire terminal at circuit breaker. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short circuit in Red/Light Blue wire. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, replace circuit breaker.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect White control module connector. Using ohmmeter, check continuity of moon roof switch and wiring at White control module connector. See MOON ROOF SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST . If continuity is not as specified, replace switch and/or repair wiring and retest.
    MOON ROOF SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST

    Switch Position Continuity Between Terminal No.
    Released (1)
    Close 3 & 5
    Open 2 & 5
    (1) No continuity between terminals 2, 3 and 5.
  5. Check continuity between White moon roof control module connector terminals No. 2, 3 and 5, and ground. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair wiring. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step.
  6. Reconnect White control module connector and Black control module connector. Disconnect Brown moon roof motor connector. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between motor connector Purple wire terminal and Blue wire terminal. If voltage exists, go to next step. If voltage does not exist, go to step 13).
  7. Check voltage between White wire terminal of Brown moon roof motor connector and ground. If voltage is approximately 5 volts, go to step 10). If voltage is not approximately 5 volts, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect White control module connector. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between White wire terminal of White moon roof control module connector and White wire terminal of Brown moon roof motor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair White wire and replace moon roof motor.
  9. Check resistance between White wire at either connector and ground. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair White wire and replace moon roof motor. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace moon roof control module and motor.
  10. Check voltage at Brown moon roof motor connector Black wire terminal. If voltage is approximately 5 volts, replace moon roof motor and retest. If voltage is not approximately 5 volts, go to next step.
  11. Turn ignition off. Disconnect White control module connector. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between Black wire terminal of Brown moon roof motor connector and Black wire terminal of White moon roof control module connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair Black wire and replace moon roof motor.
  12. Check resistance between Black wire at either connector and ground. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair Black wire and replace moon roof motor. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace moon roof control module and motor.
  13. Turn ignition off. Disconnect White control module connector. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between Blue wire terminal of Brown moon roof motor connector and Blue wire terminal of White moon roof control module connector If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair Blue wire and retest.
  14. Turn ignition off. Disconnect White control module connector. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between Purple wire terminal of Brown moon roof motor connector and White moon roof control module connector If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace control module and retest. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair Purple wire and retest.
