Test C - Temperature Gauge Inaccurate

  1. Check operation of fuel gauge. If fuel gauge operates properly, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not operate properly, go to step 3).
  2. Test temperature gauge. See TEMPERATURE GAUGE  under COMPONENT TESTS. If temperature gauge is okay, replace temperature indicator sender. If temperature gauge is not okay, go to step 5).
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect 3 instrument cluster electrical connectors. Turn ignition on. On vehicles with tachometer, measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C2, terminal No. 4 (Black/Yellow wire). On vehicles without tachometer, measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C3, terminal No. 3 (Black/Yellow wire). See Figure and Figure . Voltage should be greater than 10 volts. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/Yellow wire in question. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Turn ignition off. On vehicles with tachometer, measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C1, terminal No. 5 (Black/Green wire). On vehicles without tachometer, measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C3, terminal No. 7 (Black/Green wire). See Figure and Figure . Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace temperature gauge. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair Black/Green wire in question. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
    NOTE: Black/Orange wire between instrument cluster connector and temperature indicator sender changes to Red/White in harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect 3 instrument cluster electrical connectors. On vehicles with tachometer, measure resistance between temperature indicator sender harness connector Red/White wire and instrument cluster harness connector C2, terminal No. 5 (Black/Orange wire). On vehicles without tachometer, measure resistance between temperature indicator sender harness connector Red/White wire and instrument cluster harness connector C3, terminal No. 5 (Black/Orange wire). See Figure and Figure . Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair Black/Orange wire in question. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  6. Measure resistance between ground and temperature indicator sender harness connector Red/White wire. Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not greater than 10 k/ohms, repair Red/White wire between temperature indicator sender harness connector and instrument cluster harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  7. Visually inspect instrument cluster printed circuit for damage, cracks or hot spots. If instrument cluster printed circuit is okay, replace temperature gauge. If instrument cluster printed circuit is damaged, replace printed circuit and gauge contact clips. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
