Front Wheel Bearings: Adjustment
- Install Spacer Selector (T87C-1104-B). See Fig 1 . Clamp bolt head in vise. Tighten nut in stages to 36 ft. lbs. (49 N.m), 72 ft. lbs. (98 N.m), 108 ft. lbs. (147 N.m), and 145 ft. lbs. (196 N.m). After tightening nut to each torque, seat bearings by rotating knuckle.
- Remove knuckle and Spacer Selector from vise. Clamp knuckle in vise, in area of spring and shock mount.NOTE: Read torque wrench just as spacer selector starts to rotate.
- Using INCH-lb. torque wrench, measure torque to rotate spacer selector. If torque is 2.2-10.4 INCH lbs. (0.25-1.8 N.m), outer bearing retainer is of correct thickness. If torque is less than specified, install a thinner retainer washer. If torque is more than specified, install a thicker retainer washer.
- Bearing spacers are available in various thicknesses. See PRELOAD SPACER table. Changing spacer thickness one number changes bearing preload 1.7-3.5 INCH lbs. (0.2-0.4 N.m). Install appropriate spacer to adjust preload to specification. Remove preload spacer selector set.
