Rear Brake Shoes

NOTE: Rear brakes adjust themselves automatically as the vehicle is driven. Manual brake adjustment is necessary only after brake service, or if the adjuster has malfunctioned.
  1. Remove rear brake drums and hold-down springs. See REAR BRAKE SHOES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Apply small amount of Grease (ESA-M1C172-A) to shoe pads. Install hold-down springs.
  2. Measure brake drum inside diameter with brake drum gauge. Measure diameter across brake shoes. Insert screwdriver into brake adjuster quadrant. See Fig 1 . Adjust shoes and linings to the same diameter as brake drum.
  3. Install brake drum and wheel. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Make final adjustment by applying brakes several times while driving vehicle forward and reverse.
