Brake Warning Never/Always On

  1. Bulb Check  - Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove brake system indicator bulb from instrument cluster. Ensure continuity exists between bulb terminals. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace bulb.
  2. Starting System Signal Check  - Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster C209 (White) connector. Disconnect distributor connectors to prevent engine from starting. Place shift lever in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T). Place ignition switch in START position. Check voltage between instrument cluster connector C209 terminal A3 (Black/White wire on A/T, or White wire on M/T) at instrument cluster connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair open in Black/White wire or White wire.
  3. Fluid Level Sensor Check  - Turn ignition off. Disconnect brake master cylinder fluid level sensor. Check resistance across fluid level sensor terminals with fluid level below MIN (minimum) level, then above MIN level. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms with fluid level below MIN level, and about 500 ohms with fluid level above MIN level. If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If resistances are not as specified, replace brake master cylinder fluid level sensor.
  4. Fluid Level Sensor Ground Circuit Check  - Check resistance of Black wire between ground and fluid level sensor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 6) (Canadian models) or next step (USA models). If resistance is not as specified, repair open in Black wire.
  5. Parking Brake Switch Signal Check  - Turn ignition off. Disconnect parking brake switch connector. Check resistance of Green/Yellow wire between ground and parking brake switch with parking brake engaged, then released. If resistance is less than 5 ohms with parking brake engaged, and greater than 10,000 ohms with parking brake released, go to next step. If resistances are not as specified, replace parking brake switch and bracket.
  6. Parking Brake Switch Signal Circuit Check  - Ensure instrument cluster C209 (White) connector and brake master cylinder fluid level sensor connector are disconnected. Disconnect parking brake switch connector (USA models) or warning chime module connector (Canadian models). Warning chime module is located behind left side of instrument panel. Check resistance of Green/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and parking brake switch or chime module. Also, check resistance of Green/Yellow wire between instrument cluster connector C209 terminal A10 and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between connectors, and greater than 10,000 ohms between instrument cluster connector C209 and ground, replace instrument cluster printed circuit board (USA models) or go to next step (Canadian models). If resistances are not as specified (either model), repair Green/Yellow wire.
  7. Printed Circuit Board Check (Canadian Models)  - Turn ignition off. Reconnect instrument cluster C209 connector. Turn ignition on. Ground Green/Yellow wire at warning chime module connector. If brake system indicator lights up, diagnose warning chime module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS. If brake system indicator does not light up, replace instrument cluster printed circuit board.
