Charge Indicator Reads Inaccurately

  1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Turn headlights on. Turn heater blower fan on high. Observe charge indicator. If charge indicator needle moves toward lower portion of NORMAL band, go to next step. If charge indicator needle does not move toward lower portion of NORMAL band, check fuse No. 18 (Aerostar) or fuse No. 11 (Ranger) located in instrument panel fuse panel. On Aerostar, check battery-to-circuit breaker and cluster connector C250, terminal No. 12 (Red/Yellow wire), and go to step 6). See Figure . On Ranger, check battery-to-circuit breaker and cluster connector C214, terminal No. 13 (Red/Yellow wire), and go to step 6). See Figure .
  2. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and load side of fuse No. 18 (Aerostar) or fuse No. 11 (Ranger) located in instrument panel fuse panel. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 4). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and feed side of fuse No. 18 (Aerostar) or fuse No. 11 (Ranger) located in instrument panel fuse panel. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace fuse and retest system. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair wiring to fuse. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Partially remove instrument cluster leaving connectors connected. See appropriate INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. On Aerostar, measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster connectors C250, terminal No. 12 and C251, terminal No. 13 (all Red/Yellow wires). See Figure . On Ranger, measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster connectors C214, terminal No. 13, C215, terminal No. 8 and C216, terminal No. 1 (all Red/Yellow wires). See Figure , Figure and Figure . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in appropriate Red/Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. On Aerostar, check continuity from cluster connector C250, terminal No. 14 (Black/White wire) and ground. See Figure . On Ranger, check continuity from cluster connector C215, terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire) and ground. See Figure . If ground circuit is good, go to next step. If ground circuit is broken, repair Black/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  6. Turn ignition off. Using ohmmeter, check wiring and instrument cluster printed circuit for shorts or opens by physically flexing wiring and observing continuity. Continuity reading should not fluctuate. If wiring and printed circuit test okay, replace charge indicator. See GAUGES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. On Aerostar, if wiring or printed circuit do not test okay, repair wiring or replace instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. On Ranger, if wiring or printed circuit do not test okay, repair wiring or replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT (RANGER)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
