Removal (Continental)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector and position out of way. Remove ground straps from dash panel. Ground straps are located above ECM harness. Using Powertrain Lift (014-00765) and Universal Powertrain Removal Bracket (014-00766), support front sub-frame.
  2. Remove primary steering column boot attachments. Remove intermediate shaft bolts and steering column intermediate shaft coupling. Working from inside of passenger compartment, remove secondary steering column opening weather seal.
  3. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove tie rods from steering knuckles. Mark and remove tie rod ends from shafts. Remove nuts from steering gear-to-sub-frame bolts. Remove bolt air suspension height sensor attachments. See Figure.
  4. Remove rear sub-frame-to-body bolts. Remove dual converter "Y" pipe. Lower Powertrain Lift (014-00765) or equivalent carefully until front sub-frame separates from body approximately 4" (100 mm). Remove 2 heat shield to bracket pins. Remove shield. Remove left stabilizer bar link. Disconnect power steering axiality actuator and pressure switch harness connectors.
  5. Rotate steering gear to clear bolts from front sub-frame and pull left to facilitate line fitting removal. Remove pressure line fitting from power steering auxiliary actuator and return line from steering gear. Remove power steering lines from steering gear heat shield bracket. Remove heat shield from power steering heat shield bracket. Remove steering gear assembly through left wheel well.
