Removal (Cougar, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Mark VIII)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator. Remove the nut from the left exhaust manifold pipe stud. Drain the fuel tank if it has more than 1/8 of a tank of fuel. Raise the vehicle.
  2. Remove four center crossmember bolts and the crossmember. Remove four center crossmember bolts and the crossmember. Remove the muffler outlet pipe nuts at the muffler. Remove the exhaust hanger insulator from the exhaust pipe hanger stud. Lower and secure the pipe with mechanics wire.
  3. Remove the subframe crossmember bolts and the crossmember near the rear of the fuel tank. Remove the fuel tank modification shield and the pipe kit retainers and shield on the forward side of the fuel tank.
    4. NOTE: If the original mark is not visible on the rear axle universal joint flange, mark both the flange and the driveshaft centering socket yoke.
  4. Locate the original paint mark on the rear axle universal joint flange and mark the rear driveshaft centering socket yoke in same location. Remove four driveshaft bolts.
    5. CAUTION: Use care not to damage the fuel tank, to prevent a fuel leak.
  5. Place a powertrain lift under the fuel tank and raise it. Remove the fuel tank support strap bolts. Remove one strap and lower the fuel tank approximately six inches
  6. Separate the driveshaft from the axle. Pull the driveshaft toward the rear of the vehicle and remove it. Install a suitable plug in the extension housing to prevent fluid leakage. Raise the fuel tank, position the straps, and install the bolts. Lower and remove the powertrain lift.
  7. Place a drain pan under the transmission. Remove the transmission pan retaining bolts, lower the pan and drain the fluid
  8. Install the transmission pan and retaining bolts. Remove the drain pan.
  9. Remove the left and right exhaust pipe-to-manifold nuts. Disconnect four HO2S connectors. Remove the shift cable nut and cable.
  10. Remove the torque converter access cover bolts, access cover, and spacer plate bolt. Position a Transmission Jack 014-00942 under the vehicle. Secure the transmission to the jack adapter.
  11. Remove the left and right transmission crossmember bolts, slightly lower the transmission, and remove the dual three-way catalytic converter assembly.
  12. Remove the transmission-to-crossmember insulator nut and the crossmember. Remove the starter motor bolts and secure the starter aside, using mechanics wire.
  13. Disconnect the HO2S harness locator from the transmission fluid level indicator tube bracket and disconnect the harness.
  14. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator tube bolt from the right rear of the cylinder head. Remove the tube and insert a plug.
  15. Disconnect the transmission range (TR) sensor connector and transmission solenoid body connectors. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines and insert caps over the lines.
  16. Remove the rubber torque converter inspection access plug. Rotate the converter and remove four nuts. Discard the nuts.
  17. Remove two upper transmission bell housing bolts. Raise the transmission and install a suitable jack stand under the oil pan. Remove the five remaining transmission bolts. Separate the transmission from the engine. Lower the transmission and remove it from under the vehicle.
