Test B - Fuel Level Always Reads Empty

  1. Perform fuel gauge test. See FUEL GAUGE  under COMPONENT TESTING. If fuel gauge is okay, go to next step. If fuel gauge tests bad, replace fuel gauge and retest system.
  2. Perform fuel level sensor test. See FUEL LEVEL SENSOR under COMPONENT TESTING. If fuel level sensor is okay, go to next step. If level sensor tests bad, replace fuel level sensor and retest system.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect cluster connector C249 on vehicles without tachometer (C254 with tachometer). See Figure -8. Measure resistance of Black/Green wire between cluster connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Green wire and retest system.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect fuel level sensor connector. Measure resistance of Black/Green wire between fuel level sensor connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Green wire and retest system.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cluster connector C249 on vehicles without tachometer (C254 with tachometer) and fuel level sensor connector. Measure resistance of Yellow wire between cluster connector and fuel level sensor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit and retest system. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow wire and retest system.
