Differential Bearing Preload

  1. Install differential front bearing race into clutch housing. Position differential assembly in clutch housing. Place rear bearing race on differential rear bearing cone. Install Shim Selection Gauge (part of T88C-77000-JF) with Shim Gauge Adapter Ring (T90P-7025-AH) on top of rear bearing race. See Fig 1 .
  2. Turn gauge halves to eliminate any gap between them. Place 6 collars from Shim Selection Kit (T88C-77000-JF) on clutch housing. Place transaxle case on collars. Install washers and retaining bolts supplied with shim selection kit. Tighten retaining bolts to 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-26 N.m).
  3. Adjust gauge, using pins provided, until all free play is removed and bearing race is seated in case. Turn gauge halves back together until gap between gauge halves is eliminated.
  4. Insert Differential Rotator (T90P-7025-BH) through transaxle case and engage pinion shaft. Using a torque wrench on differential rotator, turn selector gauge halves apart until a reading of .26-6.6 INCH lbs. (.03-.74 N.m) is obtained. Remove differential rotator. Using a feeler gauge, measure gap in shim selection gauge. See Fig 1 .
  5. Take measurements at 90-degree intervals. Largest measurement obtained is thickness of shim required to obtain specified differential bearing preload. Select shim that is equal to or slightly larger than measurement obtained. Use no more than 2 shims. Shims are available in thicknesses of .004-.036" (.10-.90 mm), in .002" (.05 mm) increments.
  6. Separate transaxle case from clutch housing and remove measuring tools. DO NOT  remove bearing races in clutch housing. Install selected shim(s) and bearing race.
