Input & Output Shaft Bearing Preload

NOTE: Whenever transaxle is disassembled, bearing preload must be adjusted. Adjustment is made by selecting shims to insert between rear bearing races and transaxle case.
  1. Install input shaft bearing race into clutch housing. Install assembled shaft into clutch housing. Place rear bearing race on shaft bearing cone. Position Shim Selection Gauge (T88C-77000-CH3) on top of shaft. Place 6 collars (part of T88C-77000-JF) on clutch housing. See Fig 1 .
  2. Place transaxle case on collars. Install washers and retaining bolts supplied with preload checking tools. Tighten retaining bolts to 13-14 ft. lbs. (18-19 N.m). Mount a dial indicator to check end play of shaft. Rotate shaft several times to ensure bearings are seated. Zero dial indicator at lowest point on end of shaft.
  3. Lift shaft equally on both sides by hand, and read end play. Lower shaft and rotate until reading returns to zero. Repeat procedure to obtain at least 3 readings within .004" (.10 mm) of each other. Average the readings.
  4. Subtract .028" (.70 mm) from average end play reading to account for thickness of wave spring. Dimension obtained is thickness of shim needed to obtain specified shaft bearing preload.
  5. Using Shim Kit (E92Z-7L172-A), select shim(s) that is closest to or slightly smaller than dimension obtained in step 4) for final shim size. Use no more than 2 shims.
  6. Separate transaxle case from clutch housing remove measuring tools and input shaft. DO NOT  remove bearing race in clutch housing. Install funnel and output shaft bearing race in clutch housing. Repeat procedure for output shaft. Select shim(s) that are slightly larger than dimension obtained in step 4) for final shim size.
  7. After completing input shaft and output shaft bearing preload procedure, remove measuring tools. Separate transaxle case from clutch housing. DO NOT  remove bearing races in clutch housing. Proceed to DIFFERENTIAL BEARING PRELOAD  .
