Valve Clearance Adjustment

NOTE: Hydraulic valve lifters are used. No valve clearance adjustment is required when performing tune-up procedure. Valve clearance adjustment must be performed when refacing valve or valve seat.
  1. Position No. 1 piston at TDC of compression stroke. Install Valve Lifter Collapser (T81P-6500-A) on intake valve No. 1 rocker arm. Slowly apply pressure until valve lifter is completely bottomed.
  2. Hold valve lifter in this position and check clearance between rocker arm and valve stem tip. If clearance exceeds specification, check for defective camshaft, valve tip, valve lifter or rocker arm seat. See COLLAPSED VALVE LIFTER SPECIFICATIONS  table. If clearance is less than specification, machine valve tip or replace valve seat.
  3. With engine at TDC, check clearance on No. 1 intake valve, No. 1 exhaust valve and No. 2 intake valve. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 180 degrees. Check clearance on No. 3 intake valve and No. 3 exhaust valve.
  4. Again, rotate crankshaft 180 degrees. Check clearance on No. 4 intake valve, No. 4 exhaust valve and No. 2 exhaust valve.
