Temperature Gauge Inaccurate

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Partially remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check voltage at cluster connector C2, pin No. 5 (Purple wire). See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair circuit No. 14 (Purple wire) for open and retest.
  2. Check resistance between cluster connector C2, pin No. 4 (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair circuit No. 91 (Black/Yellow wire) and retest.
  3. Disconnect temperature sensor at sensor and connect Instrument Gauge System Tester (014-R1063) to cluster side of connector. Set tester to 173 ohms. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If gauge reads cold, go to next step. If gauge does not read cold, go to step 5).
  4. Set gauge system tester to 30 ohms. If gauge does not read hot, go to next step. If gauge reads hot, replace engine coolant temperature sensor and retest.
  5. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check voltage between coolant temperature sensor connector and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in circuit No. 8 (White/Red wire).
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect coolant temperature sensor. Disconnect cluster connector C1. Measure resistance between cluster connector C1, pin No. 6 and ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair circuit No.8 (White/Red wire) for short circuit and retest. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cluster connectors. Check for continuity across contact clips of temperature gauge. If there is continuity, go to next step. If no continuity, replace coolant temperature gauge.
  8. Connect cluster connectors. Check for continuity from gauge contact clips to cluster connector C1, pin No.6 (White/Red wire, gauge input), cluster connector C2, pin No. 4 (Black/Yellow wire, gauge ground) and cluster connector C2, pin No. 5 (Purple wire, ignition voltage). See Figure . If there is continuity at all circuits, replace coolant temperature gauge and retest. See TEMPERATURE GAUGE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If continuity is not present at all circuits, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See, under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION, PRINTED CIRCUIT  .
