4EAT (Escort & Tracer)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable to deactivate shift-lock system. Put shift control selector in PARK position. Remove shift lever knob-to-shift lever screw. Remove knob. Remove shift control selector console.
  2. Disconnect wiring connectors as needed. Remove position indicator. Disconnect shift lock servo connector. Loosen shift cable bracket mounting bolts. See Fig 1. Push shift control selector lever in PARK position and hold it.
  3. Tighten shift cable bracket mounting bolts. Lightly press shift control selector push rod and make sure guide plate and guide pin clearances are correct when gear shift lever is in PARK, NEUTRAL and OVERDRIVE. See Fig 2. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
  4. Check for PARK engagement. Start engine and ensure that transmission shifts through all gears properly. Verify that vehicle only starts in PARK and NEUTRAL and that backup light work. If not, check transmission range sensor adjustment. See TRANSMISSION RANGE (TR) SENSOR/SWITCH .
