Steering Knuckle: Removal

- Place wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove hub nut and washer from axle shaft. See Figure . Raise vehicle. Remove wheel assembly. Remove brake caliper and secure aside. Remove disc rotor. Remove cotter pin and nut from outer tie rod end. Using Puller (T64P-3590-F), separate tie rod from steering knuckle.
- Using Coil Spring Compressor (D78P-5310-A), compress coil spring. Install Puller (T81P-1104-C), Metric Stud Adapter (T83P-1104-BH), Stud Adapter (T86P-1104-A1) and Hub Remover Adapter (T81P-1104-A) on hub. See Fig 1 . Tighten puller until axle shaft constant velocity joint is free of hub assembly.
- Remove upper ball joint-to-steering knuckle retaining nut and bolt. Support axle shaft, and push upward on upper control arm, disengaging upper ball joint from knuckle. Remove cotter pin and nut from lower ball joint. Using Pitman Arm Puller (T64P-3590-F), separate lower ball joint from steering knuckle. Separate steering knuckle from axle shaft. Wire axle shaft to body to maintain axle shaft in a level position.
NOTE:
Ensure metric adapters are fully threaded on wheel stud. Metric adapters must be positioned opposite the stud adapter. See Fig 1
. DO NOT use hammer to separate axle shaft from hub assembly, or constant velocity joint will be damaged.
