Axle Shaft: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
    NOTE: Before disconnecting steering linkage from steering knuckle, place steering wheel in centered position.
    WARNING: Axle shaft hub nut is a torque prevailing design and not to be reused, discard upon removal. NEW axle hub nut must used.
  1. Place wheels in straight-ahead position. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel assembly. Remove axle shaft hub nut and washer from axle shaft, discard axle shaft hub nut. Remove coil spring. See COIL SPRING  . Place reference mark on axle shaft flange and drive axle flange for reassembly reference. Remove bolts from axle shaft flange. Separate axle shaft from drive axle flange.
  2. WARNING: Support axle shaft when disconnected from drive axle flange. DO NOT allow axle shaft to hang unsupported, or constant velocity joint on axle shaft will be damaged.
  3. Remove shock absorber. See Figure . Remove rubber bumper from crossmember. Remove steering knuckle. See STEERING KNUCKLE  . Remove axle shaft assembly.
