Diagnostic Aids
Perform this test when instructed by QUICK TEST or if directed by other test procedures. This test is intended to diagnose:
- Purge solenoid valve.
- Wiring harness circuits (purge solenoid valve and VPWR).
- Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
1) KOEO Code 565: Check Purge Solenoid Valve Resistance Code 565 indicates fault in purge solenoid valve circuit. Possible causes for this fault are:
- Faulty purge solenoid valve.
- Open or short circuit in wiring harness circuit.
- Faulty PCM.
Turn ignition off. Disconnect purge solenoid valve. Disconnect vacuum hoses and blow air through valve. Air should not flow through valve. Connect battery voltage to VPWR terminal at purge solenoid valve and ground other purge valve terminal. Blow air through valve. Air should flow through valve. If air flow is as specified, go to next step. If air flow is not as specified, replace purge solenoid valve and repeat QUICK TEST .
2) Check VPWR Circuit Voltage Disconnect purge solenoid valve. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between VPWR terminal at purge solenoid valve vehicle harness connector and negative battery terminal. If voltage is more than 10.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10.5 volts or less, repair open circuit, reconnect all components and repeat QUICK TEST.
3) Check Purge Solenoid Valve Circuit Continuity Turn ignition off. Disconnect purge solenoid valve. Disconnect 60-pin PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install Breakout Box (49-UN01-058, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between purge solenoid valve circuit test pin (No. 11, 15, 31 or 54 as applicable) at breakout box and purge solenoid valve harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. Remove breakout box, reconnect all components and repeat QUICK TEST.
4) Check Purge Solenoid Valve Circuit For Short To Ground Turn ignition off. Disconnect purge solenoid valve. With breakout box installed and PCM disconnected, measure resistance between purge solenoid valve circuit test pin (No. 11, 15, 31 or 54 as applicable) and test pins No. 40, 46 and 60 at breakout box. If all resistance readings are more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short to ground. Remove breakout box, reconnect all components and repeat QUICK TEST.
5) Check Purge Solenoid Valve Circuit For Short To Power Turn ignition off. Disconnect purge solenoid valve. With breakout box installed and PCM disconnected, measure resistance between purge solenoid valve circuit test pin (No. 11, 15, 31 or 54 as applicable) and test pins No. 37 and 57 at breakout box. If all resistance readings are more than 10,000 ohms, replace PCM. Remove breakout box, reconnect all components and repeat QUICK TEST. If any resistance reading is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short to power. Remove breakout box, reconnect all components and repeat QUICK TEST.
